About Me

  • Name - Lobsang Gyatso Sither
  • Native - Kyidong
  • Residence - Dharamshala
  • Occupation - Digital Security Program Director,Tibet Action Institute

I was born in Dharamshala in 1982 and I completed my schooling from Upper TCV school and graduated with a B.Sc. Computer Science from Loyola College, Chennai as a Gold Medalist and then did my Software Engineering from London Metropolitan University, UK. After that, I had the opportunity to come back to Dharamshala and work with global researchers on CyberSecurity Issues facing the Tibetan Community. Since 2011, I have been working at Tibet Action Institute and I am currently the Digital Security Program Director.

I am standing for the 17th U-tsang Chithue as I believe that my expertise and experiences both professionally and personally will allow me to contribute to the Tibet movement and the parliament. I have worked closely for more than 10 years with Tibetans communicating with Tibetans inside Tibet as well as NGO’s, Institutions, Tibetan media and many International Internet Freedom organizations. A recent honour was when I was invited to testify as an expert witness on “Technological Surveillance of Religion in China”, U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom.

I have represented Tibet at the UN led Internet Governance Forum in Indonesia, Stockholm Internet Forum, Sweden, RightsCon in Philippines, San Francisco, Toronto and many others. I was a member of the Global Cyber Stewards network, Citizen Lab, University of Toronto and the peer-review panel for Security Planner. I was a 2018 fellow for Internet Freedom Festival which is the largest community led festival for Internet Freedom. I was also on the Advisory Board of Citizen Clinic, a public-interest cybersecurity clinic at the University of California-Berkeley.

I am frequently interviewed as an expert on Digital Security, Censorship & Surveillance in Tibet and other Internet Freedom related work by Tibetan as well as International Media.

I had the privilege to campaign for and travel with Trisur Tenzin Namgyal Tethong during the 2011 Kalon Tripa election. I was able to travel to almost every Tibetan Settlement in India which gave me a unique perspective of the exile life. Meeting and listening to their issues, hardships, and achievements made me understand how important it is for the youth to partake in the exile democracy and contribute as much as we can so that we can continue the work of our earlier generation. I also worked with Kungo to bring out a comprehensive photo book on exile, “Tsenjol: 1959 - 1989” to highlight how much His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the first generation of exile Tibetans with little or no resources were able to rebuild Tibet in Exile. If you feel that I am a worthy candidate, please vote for me.
